The definition of mental illness according to Indiana law is a psychiatric disorder that: Substantially disturbs an individual's thinking, feeling, or behavior; and impairs the individual's ability to function.
The term includes mental retardation, alcoholism, and addiction to narcotics or dangerous drugs.
Those who are affected by mental illness struggle with family issues, job stability and the medical and legal systems just as those who are affected with physical problems. Mental illness, however, has a long standing stigma and it is thought to be scary, violent, and ugly. This stigma can keep some people from getting treatment and lack of health insurance for mental health problems can also be an impediment.
The effects of Mental Illness can be helped with treatment, counseling, medication and education.
